Defense Research and Development Organization is responsible for all missile programs in India and was established in 1958 by our former president Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, also known as 'missile man' of India.
Missile types
Ballistic Type :
These are generally long range missiles, guided only at the initial stages, exhibits projectile motion throughout it's range and falls freely under the action of gravity.
Cruise Type :
These are short or medium range missiles and are guided all throughout it's range. It's path is not affected by gravity, equipped with self navigating technology and maintained at lower altitudes for not being detected by RADAR System.

Some important facts about missile programs in India
- Prithvi was the first missile to be built by India.
- BrahMos, the world’s fastest cruise missile is developed jointly by India & Russia and named after after two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.
- Agni-V is India’s longest-range missile to carry a nuclear warhead.
- “K” missiles are faster, lighter and stealthier and named after Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
